Late season low in the Coral Sea

Late season low in the Coral Sea
A low is likely to strengthen as it encounters favourable conditions on its westward march into the Australian region. Currently the low is located south of Solomon Islands and it expected to intensify into a Tropical Cyclone as it moves in the northern Coral Sea. As we have seen throughout the 2013-2014 Australian cyclone season, these systems are somewhat unpredictable in their track and intensity. If the low moves closer to the Peninsula, southeasterly winds are likely to strenghten near the coast by Sunday. Heavy rain is expected along the southern flank of this system from Wednesday, with totals expected to be in the order of 50-100mm in areas north of Cooktown. The official end to cyclone season for the Eastern Region is April, however there have been several cyclones which have formed later in the season, such as Tropical Cyclone Zone last year which was officially named on the 30th April 2013. The next tropical cyclone which develops in the Australian region will be called Ita.
