Landholders face flood isolation

Tuesday March 9, 2010 - 08:24 EDT

The State Emergency Service says floodwaters around Mungindi could leave some rural properties isolated for a week.

Floodwaters moving down the Barwon River are expected to peak tomorrow near 6.3 metres, below the moderate flood level of 6.7.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to stock up on food and move livestock and farm equipment to higher ground.

North-west incident controller Steve Martin says the flooding is not expected to be serious.

"The people in the local area know which roads are going to be cut - the main road through to Moree - the highway - is open, we don't expect that to close at all because ... the Byra Crossing is usually the only one that causes that to be closed and there's ... not a lot of water running in the Gilgai Creek which causes that," he said.
