Hobart on its way to its hottest September on record with help from recent warm days. A warm airmass has filtered over Tasmania in northerly winds ahead of a large trough and front for the last couple of days. This saw temperatures soar over six degrees above average for the last three days in Hobart with the mercury reaching its peak yesterday at 24.9, over nine degrees above average. With just a week left in the month and temperatures forecast to remain relatively warm it looks like Hobart will record its warmest September on record. The previous warmest September was in 1972 with an average of 17.4. Should the current forecast hold, the city will end up with an average maximum 17.7, making it the the warmest September in 132 years. Elsewhere, Bushy Park is only 0.2 of a degree off its September record and Eddystone Point 0.5 a degree short. With some warm days to come both these places may achieve there warmest September in over half a century. Cold fronts have generally been weaker-than-normal, keeping almost all of Tasmania warmer and drier than average this month. Last night cloud only allowed the temperature to drop to 11.1 in Hobart, the warmest night this month, and 14 in Tasman Island, the warmest September morning since records began in 2002. For much of Tasmania maxima today will be a bit cooler than yesterday as cloud and showers ahead of the front limits warming. The front is due to hit Wednesday afternoon bringing a few days of cooling with showers and cloud for the end of the working week before skies clear and temperatures rise for the weekend.
