Heavy storms rolled through Brisbane

Rob Sharpe
Southeast Queensland faced a barrage of thunderstorms yesterday afternoon, with more to come next week. A low pressure trough caused towering thunderstorms to develop in the afternoon. The large volumes of moisture within the atmosphere helped rain rates to become very heavy, with 15mm recorded in merely 10 minutes in Brisbane's CBD. In fact, across virtually all of the Brisbane area rainfall amounts ranged from 10-25mm. Lightning was very frequent, with 2800 lightning strikes recorded in the hour and a half up until 5pm, averaging about one lightning strike every two seconds. Conditions are much more stable in Brisbane today, with just a couple of light showers in the area. During the weekend, the weather will remain pleasant and generally dry, making it a great time to get out and about without an umbrella. Next week the risk of thunderstorms will return, with the greatest risk of storms on Monday and Tuesday.
