Heavy rain looms for eastern Australia

Heavy rain looms for eastern Australia
Eastern Australia will face a significant rain event this week. Widespread rain should reach into five states and territories, with scattered falls of over 50mm possible from central Queensland through to northeast parts of Tasmania. A broad trough of low pressure will span the nation's east by Wednesday evening. During Thursday, an upper level cold pool will interact with this trough and produce a low pressure system over south-eastern Australia. Much of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania will receive heavy rain by Sunday. This swathe of the country that is in for a wet week includes Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Hobart. The heaviest rain is likely to fall in Queensland and New South Wales from Thursday night and throughout Friday. Interior parts of both states and Queensland's tropical coast may see up to 100mm accumulate on these days. Victoria will see rainfall increase on Friday as the low tracks south into the state. Heavy rain should continue until at least Sunday, although the heaviest falls are likely to contract into eastern Victoria later on the weekend. Southern parts of the Gippsland districts may receive over 100mm of rain by the start of next week. Much of Tasmania may see more than 20mm over coming days, although this total will be boosted by a cold front on Wednesday. The southward moving low should bring heavy falls in the state's northeast on Friday night or Saturday. Keep checking weatherzone.com.au for updates on this event.
