Heavy rain continues in Queensland

Ben Domensino, Friday January 27, 2012 - 14:10 EDT

More than half a metre of rain has already fallen in southeast Queensland since the beginning of the week, and over coming days inland parts of the state face the risk of widespread flooding.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms have been forming along the southeast QLD coast all week as a persistent flow of moisture fed into an unstable atmosphere.

As heavy rain again pushed onto the southeast coast this morning, Springbrook was soaked with 158mm. This brings their accumulated total over the last four days to an impressive 503mm.

While Brisbane was fortunate enough to escape the heavy falls this morning, many surrounding areas saw over 100mm. Bribie Island, located north of the city, received 151mm including 111mm in just two hours. The Gold Coast was also soaked, with Oyster Creek gaining 91mm in just one hour.

Thankfully for the sodden coast, the heaviest falls are expected to move further inland from tomorrow.

A tropical low currently moving east from the Northern Territory will head south over the Queensland interior bring heavy rain. Widespread totals of 50-100mm are likely in the Northwest, Central West, Central Highlands, Channel Country and Maranoa and Warrego districts over the next 4 days, with localised totals of up to 150mm.

Localised flash flooding will remain a threat as this rainfall continues over the coming days and as surface runoff flows into the river systems, prolonged river flooding is also likely to develop.
