Heavy rain and storms to engulf Victoria

Heavy rain and storms to engulf Victoria
Victorians can expect a wild and stormy day on Wednesday, with flash flooding, damaging winds and large hail possible. A low pressure trough will create very unstable atmospheric conditions over the state, providing the trigger for storms. Very warm and humid conditions will provide the ideal conditions for their development. The area of heaviest rain and most intense storms in forecast to be about the state's northeast, with scattered falls of 50-100mm. There is ample moisture available to storms and so local falls of above 100mm are possible, bringing a flood risk. Storms are likely in Melbourne later in the day. These storms will develop to the northwest of the city and be steered in from late afternoon. Although the storms will be fast moving, high rainfall totals are possible due to the potential for additional storms to track over the same areas. A cooler and drier west to southwest change will push across the state through the day. This will help to intensify storms on its approach, as well as bring the risk of hail with storms. Storms will contract to the states north and east from late this evening, before clearing early on Thursday.
