Heavy rain and storms threaten eastern Queensland

Heavy rain and storms threaten eastern Queensland
A trough is gradually slipping further north and east through Queensland and New South Wales, raising concerns for already flooded areas of eastern Queensland. Many locations across central and eastern Queensland have already received as much as double their December average from the rain event at the start of the month. This approaching band of rain will add to the already swollen rivers and dams. For today rain and potentially severe storms will continue to soak areas from the Darling Downs to the Central West and Gulf Country. Charleville has received 42mm so far this month and another 16mm in just two hours this morning, but at this point only minor to moderate flooding is likely for surrounding rivers. As the trough pushes further east on Sunday and Monday, coastal Queensland will be on alert with widespread 30 to 60mm from the Southeast to the Central Coast. Some areas may even receive in excess of 100mm. Many rivers are expected to exceed their minor flood levels, especially around Rockhampton, which has already seen 141mm in the last 10 days and should peak near 200mm by Tuesday. The rain will then ease from Tuesday, leaving just scattered showers in its wake.
