Heavy rain and storms hit Queensland

Heavy rain and storms hit Queensland
Heavy storms are lashing central Queensland, whilst rain and strong winds affect the coast. Rileys Crossing, near Emerald, received a whopping 94mm in a single hour yesterday, leading to flash flooding. Emerald itself also saw showers and storms amount to 30mm. A semi-stationary moisture-laden trough is the culprit for the heavy thunderstorms that also affected Cloncurry and Richmond. The trough is also delivering strong southeasterly winds and frequent showers to coastal regions. Across Sunday, Monday and Tuesday showers are likely to drench the Mackay and Capricornia coasts. So far these areas have already seen isolated falls up to 100mm, including almost 50mm in Bundaberg and almost 20mm in Mackay. Parts of this coastline should see rain totalling more than 200mm by the end of Tuesday before the trough weakens and shifts further north.
