Heat returns to Alice Springs

Douglas Fenton
Alice Springs is having its hottest April spell on record. Maximum temperatures have averaged 38 degrees at the airport so far this month, 10 above the average and hottest since mid February. Nights have also been warm, with Monday and Tuesday nights only dipping to 21 degrees, 9 above the norm. Mostly sunny skies have allowed heat to build over the country's interior over the past week, bringing the unseasonable heat. It is expected to reach 39 degrees again on Wednesday, having reached 39 degrees for the previous two days. There have never been three consecutive April days of above 38 degrees in the 70 years of records. Interestingly, there has only been 6 occurrences of 38 degree plus April maxima on record, all of which have occurred in the last ten years. The recent hot spell comes off the back of a cool March, with both the maximum and minimum averaging 3 degrees below average. This cooler weather was due to an active monsoon, which brought an increase in cloud and rain to the central interior. The outlook is for the hot weather to continue through to Friday, potentially smashing April heat records. A cooler southerly change will bring some respite from Easter Saturday, with the mercury only rising into the lower thirties over the long weekend under partly cloudy skies.
