Gulf graziers hope for good wet season

Melinda Howells, Tuesday December 29, 2009 - 10:00 EDT

Graziers in the Gulf of Carpentaria in far north Queensland are hoping for a good wet season.

This time last year, the region flooded for more than three months.

Burke Shire Mayor Annie Clarke says it has been hard for the land to recover.

"Those areas have been really 'flogged' I suppose is the only expression you could say," she said.

"Because the country didn't respond, or it was completely excavated by the force of the water, [we're] really looking for this next lot of rain which is incredibly late this year."
