Good signs of rain

Brett Dutschke
All indicators are pointing towards widespread rain over eastern Australia in the coming week. This will be good news for some, including those who have put up with a long dry spell, peppered with cold mornings and not so warm days. What is becoming increasingly certain is that the rain will be widespread over Queensland and New South Wales. The unknown is where there biggest rain will fall, so some will have to endure an even longer dry spell. The recent dry has been due to a very slow-moving weather pattern dominated by a high pressure system. This high has been delivering virtually the same weather to the same locations for almost a week - cold in the south and warm, gusty winds in the tropics. Advantages of a stubborn or slow-moving weather pattern is that sometimes moisture builds up enough that rain eventually falls in a widespread nature. At this stage the rain looks focussed on Queensland and to a lesser extent New South Wales. At least patchy light rain will reach Victoria and South Australia by the end of next week as moisture from the Pacific and Indian oceans combine. This will end July in a wet way, in contrast to the rest of the month.
