Several towns across Queensland saw temperatures dip below freezing this morning. 

At Amberley, the mercury dropped to -3.2 degrees, which is eight degrees below the July average, and the coldest July morning in 12 years. Parts of the Maranoa also saw sub-zero temperatures this morning, including Mitchell, Charleville and Roma. 

Across the Darling Downs, widespread sub-zero temperatures were recorded, including -5 degrees at Dalby, -3 degrees at Oakey, -2 degrees at Texas and Miles, and -1 degree at Warwick. Toowoombah saw the mercury drop to zero, its coldest July morning since 2014. 

Even though most of the Capricornia stayed above freezing, temperatures were between 4-to-8 degrees colder than average. In the Southeast Coast, Coolangatta’s 0.9 degrees was the coldest July morning since 2011, and it was Sunshine Coast’s coldest July morning in 4 years, with the mercury recording 2.6 degrees. 

Queenslanders are advised to keep the warm woolly clothes handy, as chilly mornings and frosty conditions are likely to continue this week and potentially into the weekend. A large high pressure system remains over the state, leading to clear night-time skies and light winds, combined with the very dry and cold air which has made its way north in the wake of strong fronts.
