Fresh and foggy across NSW

Sam Terry, Monday July 6, 2009 - 17:09 EST

After a very cold weekend across southern and eastern Australia, with strong winds battering the coasts and ranges, the winds have eased in time for the working week, bringing that other special winter phenomenon: fog.

Despite the drier southwesterly winds, temperatures were able to drop up to seven degrees below average overnight, causing the air in particularly prone locations to become saturated, at which point fog appeared.

Visibility decreased to between 100 and 150 metres in Canberra this morning before clearing at half-past ten. Richmond, in Sydney's northwest, had horizons obscured by fog too, with the visibility getting down to around 300 metres just before sunrise.

Generally, after winds pick up during the morning and the sun starts to heat up the air, fog disperses. This was not so in Wagga Wagga this morning. Winds did increase, but not enough to push the mercury above 7 degrees. If the temperature stays below this overnight, which is highly likely, it will be Wagga Wagga's coldest day in 5 years.

Tomorrow morning, skies will again be clear and winds light, allowing fog to develop once more.
