Fog envelops Sydney

Fog envelops Sydney
Sydneysiders awoke to an eerie morning, with areas of thick fog shrouding the city. The fog affected morning commuters, particularly air travellers, with multiple inbound international flights diverted to alternate airports. Visibility dropped to 150 metres in Canterbury and Richmond, whilst fog at the airport reduced visibility to just 200 metres. The fog developed due to high amounts of atmospheric moisture and light winds. The low pressure trough which brought flooding rain to Sydney earlier in the week is lingering just off the coast and is continuing to direct moisture in across the Sydney basin. There is also still plenty of soil moisture available to produce fog, through evaporation. Fog is defined as a visible suspension of water droplets near the surface, reducing visibility to less than 1000 metres. The fog lingered in Sydney until well after sunrise in parts, burning off at around 10am. Fog can be expected again on Sunday morning, due to light winds, clear skies and ample moisture. Western suburbs are particularly likely to see shrouding by fog in parts.
