Flood centres inundated with donations

By Kim Lyell, Friday February 24, 2012 - 09:23 EDT

Maranoa Mayor Robert Loughnan says he has been forced to call a halt to the donation of goods to flood recovery centres in two towns in Queensland's southern inland.

The towns of Mitchell and Roma were ravaged by floods this month.

Councillor Loughnan says recovery centres at the towns have now been swamped with clothing, toys, linen and furniture.

He says while cash is always welcome, the amount of goods flowing in has become unmanageable.

"We actually have far too many donations on the ground at the moment in both Mitchell and Roma," he said.

"I don't like having to do it but I have to say 'please stop being so kind, stop sending all these goods'.

"We've got clothes coming out our ears - we've got children's toys, blankets, you name it we've got more than enough."

He says the goods are causing a storage problem.

"We'll have to clear it out at the end of this recovery period and it will have to go somewhere," he said.

"I'm afraid we simply can't take any more - one more truck-load and both towns will overflow but at the same time I have to thank everyone who has donated how incredibly generous it has been."
