Farmers fear dry spell may compound salinity
Wednesday March 10, 2010 - 15:01 EDT
Esperance region farmers are concerned low rainfall could lead to increased levels of algae and salinity.
The Department of Agriculture's Brendon Nicholas says it is important that farmers look out for signs of either problem.
"As the water supply gets lower the salinity can increase and algae can also occur," he said.
"So farmers have been checking the water in any water supplies that are getting a bit low to make sure the salinity's not too high for the stock, and if there's algae present to identify the algae and control it if necessary."
