Elevated Fire Dangers for WA
Drew Casper-Richardson

Scorching temperatures are combining with gusty winds to bring elevated fire danger to many parts of northern Western Australia on Saturday.
Temperatures are soaring over northern Western Australia, especially in the Pilbara, with some locations forecast to reach the mid-forties, including Port Hedland. Northeast to southeast winds are also expected to be gusty on Saturday morning before strong sea breezes develop along the coast during the afternoon. Cooler than normal sea surface temperatures off the northwest coast of WA is also leading to less rainfall over the region, meaning that vegetation is very dry.
All of these factors combined lead to the issuing of a Fire Weather Warning for parts of Western Australia. A Catastrophic Fire Danger Warning (the highest level of warning there is) was issued for the East Pilbara Coast whilst an Extreme Fire Danger was issued for the West Kimberly Coast and East Pilbara Inland. A Severe Fire Danger is in place for a number of other districts.
Temperatures are expected to remain extremely hot on Sunday, however winds should ease a little, meaning that any fire dangers shouldn't be as high as they are on Saturday. These extreme temperatures are expected to last through the next week so further Fire Weather Warning are possible.
