Dry season showers soak north Queensland

Matt Pearce, Sunday May 25, 2008 - 19:44 EST

The most widespread showers in weeks have fallen along the north Queensland coast over the last 24 hours.

Innisfail picked up 36mm in the 24 hours to 9am Sunday, the highest daily rainfall since mid March. A number of other towns along the north coast, including Menavale, received over 30mm, also the heaviest rain since March.

The showers were the result of a moist southeasterly airstream combining with cold air in the upper levels of the atmosphere.

Showers are likely to persist through Monday between about Cooktown and Mackay. Totals of 5 to 10 millimetres can be expected, although locally higher totals approaching 20mm are once again possible.

By Tuesday, the upper level cold air will have weakened and moved out into the Coral Sea, so the showers will ease.
