Total fire bans are in place for parts of South Australia today as hot and dry air fans the state ahead of an approaching low pressure trough.

Temperatures will reach the low-to-mid thirties across most of South Australia today, including Adelaide, which is 8-10 degrees above average for this time of year in some areas.

The air passing over the state's central and eastern districts today is also very dry, with dew point temperatures dipping below zero degrees Celsius in some areas. The dew point temperature reflects how much moisture is in the air - the lower the dew point, the drier the air.

At 9am today, the dew point temperature at Adelaide Airport was -7 degrees, which is 15 degrees below average for this time of year. This dew point temperature resulted in a relative humidity value of just 9 percent at 9am, which is the lowest it's been at this time of day in 10 months.

In light of the dry, warm and windy weather, severe fire danger ratings are forecast for the Mt Lofty Ranges and Mid North Districts today, prompting fire bans from the Country Fire Service in these areas.
