Drenching cuts Capricorn Highway

By Paul Robinson, Friday February 3, 2012 - 12:13 EDT

More downpours in western parts of Queensland's Central Highlands have cut the main highway west of Emerald.

Properties north-west of Clermont have borne the brunt of the big rains, with 250 millimetres at Epping Forest and 150mm at Riverview.

Police Sergeant Jim Kelly says the Capricorn Highway is cut at Native Companion Creek, just east of the town.

"There's a metre of water across that and probably going to rise some more," he said.

"They've had in excess of 100mm in the catchment yesterday afternoon when this trough was going through and it's still got to come down.

"The water that's across the road now is from rainfall earlier on in the week, so the road's probably cut for at least 24 hours, maybe 48 I would say."

Clermont property owner Cathy Ferrie says she has had more than 150 millimetres after good rain since December.

"I never complain to have the rain - we've been very fortunate," she said.

"We probably had 12 inches in December and seven inches in January.

"My husband and I said February is the wettest month, so it looks like we're going to live up to that reputation."
