Deluge for the Pilbara heading east

Sam Terry
The heavy rain forecast to affect the interior has already hit some parts of Western Australia, with more to come. Marble Bar, in the Pilbara district, has received 51mm. This is over double its average monthly rainfall for July, and the wettest July day in five years. It was similar for Port Hedland, 35mm. During the coming days, heavy rain will spread across the country's interior, with amounts expected to rival their July records in some locations. A trough stretching into Western Australia is drawing moist air from the warm Indian Ocean into the northwest. The surface trough combined with a strong jetstream will spread the rain east over the next week. Southern parts of the Northern Territory will receive this winter deluge after having already seen more than their monthly average within the first two days of July. The Alice is one area that is expecting some of the highest totals. After receiving 15 to 30mm at the beginning of the month totals are set to soar well above the average, with as much as 70 mm possible over the next week. Alice Springs is could see its heaviest July rain in 24 years, but may still struggle to beat its 1986 record July rainfall of 144mm.
