After nearly double the monthly average rainfall last month, Darwin is currently in the midst of its driest start to October in 4 years. In the days leading up to 9am on Saturday 13th only 0.2mm of rain was recorded in Darwin. This made it the driest start to the month of October since 2014 when, up until the same time, no rain had been recorded. October 2015, 2016 and 2017 were well on their way to the monthly average of 70mm by the 13th, with both 2016 and 2017 receiving well above that by the end of the month. At only 0.2mm, it is also the 2nd driest start to October in a decade for Darwin, closely followed in 3rd by 2011 with 0.4mm. Of the last 10 years, only four (2009, 2012, 2014 and 2015) have failed to reached the monthly average. Even 2011, which started of almost as dry as this year, ended the month at double the monthly average. So what does the remainder of this October have in store for Darwin? Whilst at this stage it doesn't look like this year will claw its way up to the average of 70mm, some rainfall doesn't look too far away. Light showers are possible each day for the next week, with Wednesday and Thursday looking to bring the most plentiful falls, possibly 10-20mm over the 48 hours. Looking ahead to November and deeper into build-up, signs at this stage are indicating drier than average conditions, edging closer to average heading into summer.
