Dampened SA in for more rain but also cold, strong winds
Rain has fallen across a large part of South Australia during Wednesday and there is more to come, mainly on Friday, coinciding with cold winds. During Wednesday a weak low pressure trough led to a pretty cold, gloomy, wet day. Temperatures struggled to the mid teens while widespread five-to-15 millimetres of rain dampened the state. With a bit more rain to come during Wednesday night, Thursday is looking much drier. Just a few light showers will affect parts of the south and far north, all up amounting to less than five millimetres. During Thursday night a front and low pressure system will intensify as they cross the Bight with help from a pool of cold air travelling from Antarctica, bringing a burst of wind and rain. This winter-like system will deliver this rain and blustery, colder winds to the south, focussing on the peninsulas, hills and southeast. Among widespread two-to-ten millimetres there is potential for 15-to-30 mm, including around the Adelaide Hills. Regarding wind, gusts are likely to reach 60-80km/h over a large area and 80-90 km/h about the coasts and hills. Meanwhile, temperatures will be below 15 degrees for most of the day, feeling more like 10-to-12 degrees in the wind and rain. Warnings have already been issued for Friday's cold, wet and windy burst, including one for sheep graziers. The result will be an annoying day where coats and hats will be more appropriate than umbrellas. Even worse, all of this rain and wind is likely to cause some trees to topple. Already, much of state has exceeded its monthly average rainfall and by the weekend, almost all places will be in a similar position. Thankfully for most, it should become dry and calmer over the weekend as a high pressure system takes over.
