Within the same week, South Australia’s Coonawarra saw its coldest June morning in 30 years, as well as its hottest June morning in 30 years. 

The previous coldest June morning recorded at the current site, was -3.2 degrees, in 2017. A broad high pressure system sat over the region, and under clear, dry skies the mercury plummeted overnight with sub-zero temperatures recorded each night between Wednesday 19th and Monday 24th. The coldest of those was -3.8 degrees early in the morning on Saturday 23rd. 

As the high shifted east and the cold air began to break up, unseasonably warm days begun. Warm, gusty and dry northerly winds developed ahead of a low pressure trough and cold front, reaching 20.7 degrees on Friday, the warmest June day in 14 years. 

These northerly winds remained breezy overnight into Saturday morning, keeping the region unseasonably warm, with the mercury only dropping to 14.7 degrees, making it the warmest June night in three decades. 

It wasn't only Coonawarra that was toasty, Mt Gambier broke its 74-year June record, with a minimum of 14.1 degrees. Naracoorte also had its warmest June night in at least 16 years, with a low of 14.6 degrees. 

Shortly after 9am Saturday, heavy showers arrived, which saw the temperature drop four degrees in an hour, and it has remained 10 degrees or colder throughout Saturday afternoon.
