Cool night across the south and east

Willemien Phelan
It was a cool night across NSW with overnight temperatures in the Sydney region dipping as low as 12 degrees in Holsworthy which is 5 degrees below average. This is Holsworthy's coolest February night in 4 years, going back to 2008 when 11 degrees minimum was recorded. It continues on from a cooler than average summer. With the average maximum temperature for February in Holsworthy so far being just over 23.5 degrees, which is 5 degrees below the average. Holsworthy also recorded heavy rainfall on Saturday as a result of a severe storm. The storm brought 33mm in just under two hours between 1 and 3pm, leading to flash flooding. This adds to the heavy rainfall of last week bringing the February rainfall total for Holsworthy to 124mm. Sydney CBD awoke to a cool 17 degrees due to clear skies and a cold airmass being drawn in by southerly winds. Most of southern and eastern Australia were under the influence of this cold air. Adelaide had its coolest February night in 4 years with a 12 degree minimum, which is 5 below average. Nearby Elizabeth dipped as low as 9 degrees, 8 below average and it's coldest February night in more than 10 years. Warmer conditions are in store for next week across South Australia; Adelaide is expected to reach the low thirties by mid-week due to warm northerly winds drawing in interior heat. A lingering low pressure trough in the east however will cause the temperatures in Sydney to remain near average in the city, but below average in the west. This trough will bring a continued risk of afternoon showers and thunderstorms to the eastern seaboard for most of next week.
