Bone-dry air with calm winds have brought parts of northern New South Wales and southern Queensland, their coldest morning in over a decade. In northern NSW, Kempsey fell down to -3.2 degrees, the coldest August morning they've had in 17 years of records. Kempsey has only been colder once on record in July 2007 when the mercury fell to -3.6 degrees. Armidale (-5.1C) and Casino (-0.2C) had their coldest August morning in at least a decade, while Glen Innes (-9.0C) and Grafton (1.5C) chilled through their coldest August morning in at least 5 years. Warwick and Ipswich in QLD both had their coldest mornings in 11 years, dropping to a mind-numbing -6.2 and -3.3 degrees respectively. It hasn't been that cold in August since 1995 in these locations. Temperatures were able to fall so low across the region this morning due to how dry it has been in the area. The dew-point temperature (a measure of how much moisture is in the air) fell down to -19.5 degrees celsius in Warwick this morning at 9am, with a relative humidity of just 12%. With the air remaining very dry over the next few days with continuing clear skies and still overnight winds, these locations may have not seen the last of these freezing mornings. Winds will only start to increase marginally from Wednesday, so you may want to keep that extra blanket on your bed for the next couple days.
