Chilly start across the southeast

Chilly start across the southeast
It was a cold morning across New South Wales and northern Victoria, with many places across the states waking up to frozen pipes and frosty foliage. With the mercury falling to -5 degrees, Forbes just had their coldest morning since 2002 - that's nearly eight degrees below their average. Grenfell, Taralga and Oberon all had their coldest July morning since 1986, all recording temperatures of -4 degrees or less. Bendigo just braced their chilliest morning of any month since June 2006. Meanwhile, Redesdale plummeted to -4 degrees overnight, seven degrees below their average and the coldest July morning since 1994. Castlemaine also fell to -4 degrees which turns out to be their coldest July minimum since 1997. For some of the capital cities, Sydney had its coldest July morning since 2012 while Canberra dipped down to a chilly -7 degrees, their coldest July morning since 2011. The cold snap was caused by a front that swept through the south east. As the cold front passed and a high pressure ridge developed, a cold pool of air was left in its wake. This allowed skies to clear and winds to become light. Temperatures steadily dropped over night and only began to rise once the sun rose at around 6:30am. Although sunny days are the forecast this weekend, cold mornings look to continue across New South Wales and northern Victoria as this pool of cold air lingers and the high pressure system slowly edges east.
