Canberra's freezing morning leads to cold day
Robert Wood

The nation's capital saw a very cold morning with -4.4 degrees, not a record but as clouds moved over early morning, it will struggle to warm past the single digits.
A weak area of high pressure had allowed most of southeast Australia to cool quickly overnight, a common winter occurrence. Unfortunately for many areas of the ACT and Southern Highlands, temperatures were down to -3 to -7 degrees before a dense cloud band moved in at the coldest point of the morning. This cloud was ahead of a low pressure system that will likely last through the day.
Areas of the Southern Highlands and ACT will see temperatures struggle to warm past zero in a few locations and mid single digits for many others. Light rain and snow and will likely make those cold temperatures feel even colder through the day and into the evening. Brisk winds tonight and light rain will continue the cold and damp conditions.
If temperatures in the capital do not exceed 8 degrees, it will be Canberra's coldest day since August last year.
Stronger winds Monday and breaks of sunshine will allow it to warm slowly, returning it to near average.
