Cairns sets record October rainfall

Cairns sets record October rainfall
Cairns has just smashed its record for October by seeing more than its highest monthly total, in just the last 24 hours. Cairns has seen one of its heaviest one day rain totals with more than 212mm of rain falling steadily. The city rarely sees this much rain, except during cyclone season, and the last time it exceeded 200mm in a one day was with Cyclone Yasi! Many parts of the Northern Tropical Coast and Tableland district or from the Daintree Village to Cardwell and just inland have seen rainfall totals of 100-200mm over the past 24 hours, with Goldsborough Alert topping the gauge at 316mm. This deluge of rain and storms was being caused by a strong southeasterly wind change that has moved up the coast, that converged with a strong and very humid northeasterly wind flow. This same change and convergent area also brought the heavy showers to southeast Queensland on Monday and then the very heavy rain to the Innisfail region yesterday. This convergent area will slowly continue up the coast and likely keep Cairns very wet again for the next 24 hours before slowly dying out over Cooktown during Thursday. These downpours look to be kicking off an early start to the wet season!
