Byron and Gold Coasts get swamped by heavy rain

Byron and Gold Coasts get swamped by heavy rain
A deep low pressure trough has spread areas of rain over southern QLD and northeastern NSW, with the heaviest along the border. Coolangatta has seen its heaviest rain in almost three years with 153mm, whilst nearby Tweed Heads picked up a whopping 292mm in the 24 hours to 9am this morning. Rainfall above 100mm was limited to a small area from Coolangatta to Dunoon and Nimbin. Elsewhere, rain was not as heavy, but has been very handy for farmers over inland areas. Charleville has gained 80mm over the past two days, helping it to 150mm so far in December, its wettest December since 2010. Further east, Roma and Stanthorpe have picked up 57mm and 44mm respectively in the same period. Unfortunately for many farmers they have again missed out on this rain. Today, the trough will start to weaken, producing less intense rain on the coast and less widespread rain further inland. As the week progresses thunderstorms will continue each day, focussing in the east midweek before spreading back across the west by next weekend.
