Brisbane soaks in wettest day in two years

Brisbane soaks in wettest day in two years
Southeast Queensland has had an extremely wet morning with widespread falls of 30-60mm of rain in the space of just a few hours. The city of Brisbane has seen over 100mm of rain in the last 12 hours. The rain started falling just after midnight and hasn't stopped yet. Between 12:30am and 9am the city's rain gauge received 100mm, the largest total to 9am seen in two years. There were some periods where 13mm was collected in the space of 10 minutes and hour long periods of nearly 40mm. The persistent and often heavy rain was widespread across the region, with totals to 9am as much as 73mm at the Gold Coast, 56mm at Amberley and 55mm at Coolangatta. The rain is likely to continue for much of today, possibly becoming a little more broken and lighter this afternoon, but a severe weather warning is in place for heavy rain. The severe weather warning also warns of abnormally high tides that are due around midday. Higher than normal tides in themselves aren't usually an issue, but when combined with heavy rainfall that will now be rushing along rivers to the sea, they could cause some flooding of low lying and vulnerable coastal areas. Residents are advised to avoid creeks and rivers and to restrain from driving through flood water.
