Big wet settles in over Queensland

Tom Saunders
The heaviest rain in a generation has swamped parts of eastern Queensland during the past few days, a trend set to continue according to weatherzone.com.au. St Lawrence in the Capricornia received 408mm on Monday and Tuesday, their wettest 48 hour period in 30 years. The coast south of Townsville has already received more than 200mm this month, close to double the average for the entire month. The rain eased briefly overnight as a tropical low moved off the coast but re-developed on Wednesday as monsoon winds fed in from the north. The rain will increase on Thursday as a second low develops over northern Queensland with another 100mm likely to hit the Capricornia by Friday morning. Southeast Queensland should once again miss out on the big falls with only showers likely south of Wide Bay. The rain is also keeping Queensland unseasonably cool with highs falling 10 below average.
