Australian Open tennis weather set to heat up

Australian Open tennis weather set to heat up

The Australian Open action is set to heat up both on and off the court, with a string of days in the low to mid thirties forecast for Melbourne for at least the next seven days.

There won't be anything at Melbourne Park to rival the temps in excess of 40°C that have been experienced in the past, but we're still looking at a prolonged period of warm to hot dry weather.

  • The Australian Open started this Monday, January 17 and runs until the men's final on Sunday, January 30.
  • January is Melbourne's hottest month (in terms of daily maximum temperatures) with a long-term average daily high of 26°C.
  • Melbourne has had a warm start to 2022, with maximum temps up until this morning, January 19, averaging 28.1°C.

Here's the forecast for the next seven days, which you can find (along with lots of graphs and other data) on our Melbourne page here:

  • Wednesday (today): 27°C
  • Thursday: 30°C
  • Friday: 31°C
  • Saturday 33°C
  • Sunday: 35°C
  • Monday: 33°C
  • Tuesday: 32°C

So all in an all, the weather pattern is very much on the warm side. Unlike Nick Kyrgios' on-court behaviour, it also looks pretty stable. And as any Melburnian knows, local weather conditions are famous for being wildly different from one day to the next – or even one moment to the next at times.

That 26°C average January max temp? It’s not because you typically get a January full of 26-degree days in Melbourne. More like a mixed bag of hot stuff from the north followed by chilly summer weather from the Southern Ocean.

But not for the rest of the week. Fine and sunny is the bottom line. It's also worth mentioning that while Melbourne heat is often on the dry side, there will be a bit of humidity about this week, so temps may feel a degree or two warmer than they actually are.

Meanwhile the first significant chance of showers comes on Monday and Tuesday next week. Early indications are that there may be a thunderstorm about too.
