Engines will fire up in Melbourne on Sunday afternoon as the Australian Grand Prix gets under way but is the wild weather going to hold out? A series of low pressure troughs delivered 13mm of rain to Melbourne on Saturday and a cold front has already swept through the city on Sunday morning with another one the way. The Grand Prix is scheduled to get under way at 4:10pm with the race finishing around 6:10pm. Although showers are a risk throughout the afternoon they are more likely during the evening with the passage of the next cold front. Conditions should remain dry for the duration of the race and skies will be partly cloudy. The wind will be the most noticeable weather feature. Ahead of the cold front, northwesterly winds will reach 30-50km/h with gusts potentially reaching 70-80km/h at times. Temperatures will linger around 22 degrees for the duration of the race however the strong winds will make it feel at 3-4 degrees colder. The weather will deteriorate during the evening as spectators head home. Westerly to south westerly winds will strengthen and potentially gust close to 100km/h, most likely in the southeastern suburbs. These strong winds coupled with showers and cooling temperatures will make for an unpleasant trip home.
