Already colder than last winter in Victoria and tropics

Brett Dutschke
Parts of Victoria and tropical Australia are already getting colder than last winter with frost making an early appearance. Frost hit most Victorian districts this morning, including some Melbourne suburbs and even as far north as the tropics, the coldest it's been in two years. Werribee and Avalon, to Melbourne's west, both chilled to minus one, whilst further inland, Horsham dipped to minus three. In the tropics, brief light frost appeared on Queensland's Atherton Tablelands and also in the Mt Isa area through to the Northern Territory's Roper-McArthur and Victoria River. Parts of northern Western Australia, including Port Hedland have also had their coldest morning in two years. Queensland and NT towns which had their coldest morning in two years include Ayr, Burketown, Katherine, Batchelor, Jabiru and Alyangula. This cold has come about under the influence of a large high, which has helped ease southerly winds and clear skies. A drier than normal airmass has also been a big contributor. Since La Nina ended last month, very dry air has taken over much of the country due to successive strong cold fronts. The air is drier than last year, so we can expect more winter frosts.
