Academic warns of cyclone complacency

Friday March 19, 2010 - 10:00 EDT

A geoscientist says Cyclone Hamish, which threatened much of the Queensland coast last year, may have increased people's complacency about cyclones.

The category five system tracked along the coast from Townsville to the Gold Coast last March, but did not make landfall.

Professor Jonathan Nott from James Cook University says there seems to be a level of apathy about the threat posed by Tropical Cyclone Ului.

"In some areas some people think that they can't be hit by a big tropical cyclone because a big one hasn't come through in such a long time," he said.

"This sort of thing we need to remove from the general public's consciousness. No matter what the category of the cyclone it can cause damaged and threaten life."
