Multiple troughs and a possible cutoff low over western parts of the state will bring some welcome rain to much of NSW this week.

A slow moving trough is triggering some showers and the odd thunderstorm over southern parts of NSW on Sunday, and should contract to the southeast this evening and into Monday, with possible localised heavy falls. Showers look to move up the coast on Tuesday, forced north by a high pressure ridge, although generally rainfall should be light.

On Wednesday, there is model disagreement on the positioning of a trough, so showers and some embedded thunderstorms could be falling over the east or west, or both. From Thursday, however, models tend to agree that widespread rain, and isolated-to-scattered thunderstorms, are likely for much of the state.

A deep trough should initially bring rainfall as it crosses the state on Thursday, but a cutoff low may form over western parts of NSW on Friday. This means there are rain-bearing systems over most parts of the state, and they could persist into next weekend.

There is some model disagreement as to where gets the heaviest rain, but some places are looking like over 80-100mm is possible by the end of next weekend. The place most likely to not receive the most rain is the northwest of the state, although 10-20mm is still possible depending on the position of the low.

The forecast rain will be very welcome by all who receive it, however it will take much more to catch up on the rain deficiencies widespread across the state.
