A wet Easter Weekend for much of eastern Australia

A wet Easter Weekend for much of eastern Australia
The Easter Weekend is looking to be cool and wet for much of Australia's east and southeast. A relatively strong cold front has begun impacting far southern parts of South Australia including the Lower Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula and Kangaroo Island. Late on Wednesday morning, Port Lincoln experienced a three degree drop in about 25 minutes. As this front continues to move east, locations along the Upper and Lower South East Coasts of South Australia will likely see a similar fate. Being further south, exposed coasts of Victoria and Tasmania are likely to also see a notable temperature drop. Having said that, far eastern parts of South Australia and Victoria's west coast will probably see the most dramatic temperature drop as the change moves through during the hottest part of the day. This will bring the most exaggerated contrast in temperatures. On Thursday, Melbourne will be 10 degrees colder than it was today, with a forecast maximum of just 18 degrees. Cool southwesterly winds and light showers will also add an element of chill making it feel as much as three degrees cooler at times. As this front moves over eastern parts of Tasmania and into the Tasman Sea during Thursday, a cut-off low is likely to develop. This isn't expected to bring much impact to mainland Australia as it will have moved well offshore by the time it becomes established. It is interesting to note that a second east coast low is looking to develop just a couple of days later off the coast of New South Wales. A trough which has been lingering off the coast of Queensland and northern New South Wales causing persistent and heavy showers will eventually deepen to such a point that an east coast low will develop on Sunday. This low is expected to move in a southeasterly direction away from the coast almost immediately, sparing southern parts of the New South Wales coast from any significant rain. Instead, the wettest parts along the coast for Saturday and Sunday are likely between the Hunter and the Northern Rivers where widespread falls of up to 70mm are a significant chance. Even Queensland's Southeast Coast has the ability to receive 50mm on Saturday alone. Following the long weekend, most models are indicating a third east coast low to develop off the coast of New South Wales maintaining the soggy conditions across the east.
