A welcome soaking for SA

A welcome soaking for SA
Parts of South Australia have seen some of the best rain in over in over year. A widespread 20-30mm of rain fell across the Adelaide area yesterday evening and overnight, with isolated falls of up to 40mm to 9am this morning. For some places, such as Adelaide Airport, Elizabeth and Parafield it was the wettest day in 15 months. Storms brought Cleve 25mm to 9am, making it the wettest May day in 22 years. Parts of the Yorke Peninsula also saw good falls of 20 to 25 mm and the wettest May day in 12 and 14 years for Edithburgh and Maitland respectively. Lightning was extensive across the southern half of the state with Weatherzone's Total Lightning Network detecting over 6000 ground-strikes, not to mention inter-cloud lightning. The culprit this time was a surface trough which was enhanced by another trough high in the atmosphere, both acting to trigger the convection. Moisture was available in an air-stream stretching back to northern WA and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Conditions will be drier today, but another upper level trough on Wednesday may trigger isolated showers and thunderstorms.
