Severe storms have been pummeling parts of southeast QLD over the last few days. Yesterday, in an insane downpour, Stanthorpe collected 75 mm, the heaviest rainfall in December since in over 90 years. The low pressure trough that triggered these storms was incredibly moisture-laden, having been infilled by humid winds from the Gulf of Carpentaria. In some spots, these waters are more than four degrees above the average. Severe storms persisted even today in the southeast corner of QLD. This afternoon, St George airport was buffeted with damaging winds, with gusts in excess of 100 km/h. At the same time, a downpour of over 23 mm fell in just 10 minutes. A southerly change will move up the coast tomorrow, stabilising the atmosphere. As a ridge develops, storms become unlikely in this region from Friday.
