A lethargic week for Australian weather

A broad high pressure belt looks set to dominate this week, bringing a calmer, more settled feel to the weather for almost all of Australia.

The global pattern will become fairly ambivalent over us during the next seven days or so. This means that pulses of cold air and frontal systems will struggle to push north. At the same time the Subtropical high pressure belt will establish itself over the Australian interior.

This situation will lead to most of the north, central east and west of the country having a mostly sunny week and little, if any rainfall. Further south in Victoria and Tasmania, rainfall is more likely as surges of polar air and fronts bounce through. A few coasts may also see a shower or two, mainly over north Queensland, with onshore winds.

All in all though it will be dry and sunny almost everywhere. The clear skies will deliver us some pleasantly mild to warm days. Overnight though, especially in the southeastern inland fog and frost patches will serve a reminder that we are still in winter.

The pattern looks likely to break down from around Monday 3rd of August, heralding a possible return to mobile fronts and low pressure systems.
