A foggy start to Friday

Sam Terry, Friday July 30, 2010 - 10:27 EST

Both Sydney and Brisbane experienced areas of thick fog this morning after a few days of rain, according to weatherzone.com.au.

Sydney-siders woke to widespread fog as far as the eye could see, which wasn't very far. Richmond experienced visibility down to 100 metres, the Airport down to 600 metres and Canterbury down to 200 metres.

A Road Weather Alert had been issued for Sydney roads due to the reduced visibility and dangerous driving conditions, but this has since been canceled.

In Brisbane, it's a similar story. Brisbane Airport is well known to experience air-travel disrupting fog, and today travelers saw the worst of it. Visibility had been recorded as low as 50 metres.

Both Sydney and Brisbane saw the fog gradually lift after sunrise, with visibility improving dramatically by 9am. Western suburbs saw the fog hang around a bit longer, with Archerfield and Richmond still seeing visibility as low as 500 metres at 9:30am.

While fog is unlikely to affect travelers on Saturday morning, stronger winds and rain will make for a dreadful start to the weekend. The rain will clear early from Sydney, but Brisbane will see a shower or two through Saturday.
