Winter delivering cold in South Australia

Winter delivering cold in South Australia

South Australia has seen some cold temperatures over the past couple of days, with winter really living up to its expectations of freezing mornings and brisk days.

On Thursday, a low pressure system drew a blanket or cold air over South Australia, bringing some of the coldest days to many locations in a while.

In central and southeastern areas on Thursday, it was the coldest day in:

  • 63 years at Parafield Ap (8.9 ºC)
  • 48 years at Edinburgh Ap (8.8 ºC)
  • 35 years at Adelaide (9.1 ºC)
  • 28 years at Edithburgh (10.0 ºC)
  • 24 years at Nuriootpa (6.7 ºC) and Strathalbyn (8.5 ºC)
  • 23 years at Roseworthy (9.0 ºC)
  • 18 years at Hindmarsh Is (7.9 ºC) and Cape Borda (9.2 ºC)
  • 17 years at Robe Ap (9.1 ºC)
  • 16 years at Lameroo (7.6 ºC)

It didn’t get quite as cold elsewhere in South Australia although there were a couple of standout low daytime temperatures:

  • In the North East Pastoral at Gluepot where 7.5 ºC was the lowest July maximum in 22 years
  • In the Lower Eyre Peninsula at Cummins where 9.2 ºC was its lowest maximum for July in 14 years

Many South Australian cities have in fact been running lower than average for maximum temperatures during July. A factor in this has been the rainfall in the state with Nuritootpa and Minlaton Ap already having their wettest July in 24 and 20 years respectively. Across the state, most average July rainfall totals have been exceeded already, with a week still to come for this month.

Don't expect this kind of weather to be going away just yet, with gusty winds brewing up some more cold days this weekend. The mercury in Adelaide has only just hit 12 ºC at 11am EST, with it not expected to climb much higher as these winds develop.
