Summer has taken a while to get going in Canberra this year but the nation's capital will get its fair share of heat during the next week. The average maximum temperature in Canberra during the first 10 days of summer was just was just 22.7 degrees. This is well below the city's long-term December monthly average of 26.2 degrees. High pressure systems have been residing over southern Australia for most of December to date, which has maintained a feed of cool southwesterly winds over the ACT. Now, this pattern is changing as a high moves into the Tasman Sea. From today until early next week, warm northwesterly winds will be the dominant weather feature in the territory. Canberra is forecast to reach the low to mid thirties each day between Tuesday and next Monday, giving the city an average maximum temperature of around 32-33 degrees during the week. This is close to 10 degrees warmer than the opening nine days of summer in Canberra. This would also be the first time since 1963 that Canberra has registered seven consecutive days over 30 degrees during December.
