Victoria's early season heat

Victoria's early season heat

Victoria just registered one of its warmest days this early in spring for the last few decades.

Strengthening northerly winds ahead of an approaching front carried warm and dry air from central Australia across Victoria on Tuesday. While this type of weather pattern is typical at this time of year, today's air mass was unusually warm for this early in spring.

Mildura had reached 29.9C as of 3pm on Tuesday, making this its earliest spring day to reach this temperature since 2013. It was also the site's warmest day since April.

Today also marks the first time any location in Victoria has been this warm this early in spring since 2013. Looking at recent decades, only four out of the last 35 years have featured a day of 29.9 degrees or warmer in Victoria this early in the season.

Victoria's highest temperature on record during September was 37.7 degrees at Mildura in 2017.
