Southwest WA gets another burst of ground quenching rain

Douglas Fenton
There have been scattered falls of 30-50mm across the Southwest and Lower West districts of WA overnight. The rain was brought by a strong cold front which also produced wind gusts up to 130km/h over Cape Naturaliste. This prompted the issuing of a severe weather warning for damaging winds and abnormally high tides along with flash flooding. Dwellingup picked up one of the highest totals to 9am with 47mm in their gauge. There was even bigger rain on Friday with a total of 68mm. The town has gained 115mm over the the past four days, the heaviest 96 hour total for June in 7 years, but despite this is still below the long term June average. After gaining a further 14mm to 9am, Perth has now received 158mm for June, which is also below their average June total of 183mm. This may be hard to believe for some after experiencing a dry start to the year, but June is Perth's wettest month of the year. Perth's June rain now accounts for over half of their yearly rain to date. Showers will tend isolated over the southwest on Wednesday. Another front should bring a further 10-20mm to the far southwest on Thursday, which will potentially lift Perth above its long term average June rain.
