In its final month of service, Adelaide’s Kent Town weather station just registered its driest July on record.

The weather station at Kent Town has been observing Adelaide’s weather since 1977. This site served as the city’s primary weather station for 40 years, up until the West Terrace/ngayirdapira station resumed service in 2017.

The last three years have been spent operating the two weather stations simultaneously to allow comparison of long-term temperature trends. With this comparison period now complete, the Bureau of Meteorology will decommission the Kent Town weather station this Friday.

In its final month of operation, Adelaide’s Kent Town weather station only registered 21.4mm of rain. This is the lowest July monthly total on record for the site, beating 22.2mm from 1997.

This month’s rainfall data from the city’s primary weather station at West Terrace/ngayirdapira is yet to be finalised, but it should come in at around 18mm. This would be the 5th driest July in records dating back to 1839 and the driest since 1924.
