Snowfalls in southern Tasmania have trapped a number of cars on a highway south of Hobart.

Tasmania Police said heavy snowfall at Sandfly left motorists stranded on the Huon Highway, at Vince's Saddle.

A statement said the road was passable for four-wheel drives, but urged extreme caution and low speeds.

Police officers are on their way to help motorists unable to get through.

They diverted traffic to avoid a complete bottleneck.
