The past two weeks have been hot and sticky in Canberra, but a cool change is finally on the way. Today is likely to be the 11th consecutive 34-degree day, breaking the previous record of 10 days set back in January 1988. Increasing cloud will herald the beginning of the cooler change today. Showers and thunderstorms are set to arrive in the afternoon, which could put a dampener on the burnout competition at Summernats. Temperatures will fall further as the winds turn southeasterly, making this evening much more pleasant once the change comes through. The long-awaited relief will be brief, with Sunday in the mid-20's, before the mercury begins the upward trend again from Monday.
